Keeping Your Pets Safe This Firework Season
Fireworks can be overwhelming for our furry friends, often leading to stress and anxiety that may cause them to run away. At Rad Companions, we care deeply about the safety and well-being of all animals. Here are some tips to ensure your pets remain calm and safe:
At Home:
-
Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet, comfortable area where your dog can retreat during fireworks.
-
Background Noise: Play calming music or use white noise machines to help mask the sound of fireworks.
-
Identification: Ensure your pet has up-to-date ID tags and a microchip.
-
Stay Calm: Your pet can sense your anxiety, so remain calm and offer reassurance.

If You’re Celebrating Away From Home:
-
Comfort Items: Leave your pet with familiar toys or items that have your scent to provide comfort.
-
Calming Products: Consider using pet-safe calming products like anxiety wraps or pheromone diffusers.
-
Check-In: Ask a trusted neighbor or friend to check on your pet if possible.

If Your Pet Is Lost on the 4th of July
1. Search Immediately:
Start looking right away. Bring treats, a leash or carrier, and a favorite toy.
Check hiding spots: under porches, in garages, sheds, bushes, and neighbors' yards.

2. Notify Neighbors:
Let neighbors know in person, or post in local Facebook groups, Nextdoor, or community apps.

3. Create and Share a Flyer
Include a clear photo, name, description, and your contact info.
Post it around the neighborhood, at local parks, vet clinics, and pet stores.

4. Post Online
Use these platforms:

-
Facebook (local lost pet groups)
-
Nextdoor
-
Pawboost.com
-
Petco Love Lost (uses facial recognition for pets)
-
Craigslist (lost and found section)

5. Call Local Animal Services

6. Check Shelters and Rescues
Visit in person if you can (animals may not be listed online right away). Check daily.

7. Alert Your Pet’s Microchip Company
Report them as lost and ensure your contact info is up to date.
8. Keep Searching Regularly
Go out at different times of day—early morning and late night can be quieter and safer for calling.

If You Find a Lost Pet on the 4th of July

1. Approach Carefully

Be gentle and cautious. Avoid sudden movements.
Use treats or food to gain trust. Don’t chase.

2. Check for ID Tags

If there's a tag, contact the owner directly.
If not, proceed to the next steps.

3. Secure the Animal

Use a leash, crate, or confined space to keep them safe.
Keep them indoors and away from your own pets, if possible.

4. Take to a Vet or Shelter to Check for a Microchip

Most vet offices or animal shelters will scan for free.

5. Report the Found Pet

Post in the same places listed above:
-
Facebook (local lost pet groups)
-
Nextdoor
-
Pawboost.com
-
Petco Love Lost (uses facial recognition for pets)
-
Craigslist (lost and found section)
-
Local shelters’ "found pet" logs

6. Make a Flyer

Include where and when the pet was found, a photo, and how to contact you.
Post it near the area you found them and at common community spots.

7. Keep the Pet Safe

If you're able, house them temporarily while looking for the owner.
If not, contact animal control or a no-kill rescue group.

8. Don’t Assume Abandonment

Many pets run due to fireworks or open gates. They may be someone's loved family member.
